Reminiscence of a Moviegoer is based on an interview with long-time WDR documentary commissioning editor Werner Dütsch. Cinephil, decisive and curious - he became one of the most influential editors in German television. The film is part of a media oral history project.
In the summer before Werner Dütsch passed away, Christiane Büchner filmed a biographical interview with him. For more than eight hours, he talks vividly and accessibly about his educational and working career. His work biography appears like a dense fabric of different insights into cinema, into which he constantly weaves new threads. It becomes a method of watching films. The distance from the beginnings of cinema to the present day of the media does not appear to him as a path of progress, but rather as an open landscape in which viewing experiences can be freely exchanged with one another.
This mental co-movement is expressed in the director's sketchy animations. Lines and shapes create an impression of cinema; the drawings draw elastic connections between the films that Dütsch calls up in conversation and their interpretation. They work towards the playful flow that will carry the transmedia project as a whole. The yet unrealized second part of the project will open up the narrative of the film to further perspectives. The protagonist will become the host of guest authors, and the film the interface for their complementary perspectives.
